Distinguished former US diplomat and intelligence officer David Gordon set to lead IISS research on geo-economics and strategy.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies is delighted to announce that Dr David Gordon is joining us as Senior Adviser in Geo-Economics and Strategy to build our programme and practice in this area. Dr Gordon’s extraordinary career encompasses service in the legislative and executive branches of the US government, as well as private consultancy and academia. A diplomat and intelligence officer, he was Vice Chairman of the National Intelligence Council, overseeing the seminal Global Trends 2020 study, and the Director of Policy Planning in the US State Department. He teaches in The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.
IISS Director-General and Chief Executive, Dr John Chipman said: “David Gordon will hugely strengthen the Institute’s intellectual firepower as we embark on the Institute’s seventh decade and focus energies on the questions that will define security debates for the coming generation. Economics and geopolitical risk are becoming ever more vital factors in good decision making by governments, businesses and academia. David is a first-rate thinker and practitioner in an area that few people are intellectually ambidextrous enough to master. We are delighted to welcome David Gordon to the IISS in our 60th anniversary year and know that he will contribute greatly as we enter an exciting new period in our international expansion.”
Dr David Gordon said of his new role: “I am excited to join IISS at a time when the linkage between economics and statecraft — from China’s Belt and Road to America’s use of sanctions — is critical for understanding global politics.”
Dr Gordon was awarded the CIA’s distinguished career intelligence medal in 2009 and is the author of Managing Strategic Surprise: Lessons from Risk Management and Risk Assessment. He will be based in the IISS–Americas office in Washington, D.C.
